Sedation And Dental Phobia

Effective dental-anxiety treatment in Hampstead

Do you struggle with a fear of the dentist? Do you wish you could get the dental treatment you so desperately need, but you just don't know how to get over your dental phobia? A long-standing fear of the dentist can stop you getting important teeth and gum care, and may even result in a painful smile, or a smile that isn't as aesthetically pleasing as you would like.

Being scared of the dentist is extremely common, and here at RP Advanced Dental and Implant Centre we understand that there are many patients who struggle with this kind of anxiety. Instead of coming to us every six months, patients might leave it years between check-ups or treatments, even if they are in pain.

Common reasons people struggle with dental anxiety include:

  • Having a bad experience with the dentist as a child
  • Anxiety over treatment being painful
  • A fear of needles
  • A fear of somebody examining your mouth
  • Somebody close to you such as a parent had a phobia of the dentist and that anxiety passed to you
  • Extreme shame over your current dental condition
  • Fear of dental tools and noises
  • Fear of a clinical environment
  • Fear of the cost of treatment
  • Experiencing pain or discomfort during a standard dental procedure and experiencing trauma from that

If you struggle with dental phobia we can help you get the dental treatment you deserve. Our team is experienced in helping patients overcome dental anxiety and we have a number of ways we can help you do that.

Understanding & Patience

Once we know you are anxious about the dentist, we will work with you to help you get the treatment you need. Perhaps you want to visit the surgery without an appointment or perhaps you would like us to explain everything we are doing? Maybe it would help to have an appointment that doesn't involve a dental examination first time? Please expect our friendly team to fully empathise with you. We are not here to judge, we are here to help you get the treatment you need!

Sedation

Lots of patients feel more comfortable having an examination or treatment using sedation. Sedation helps a patient to relax and feel more comfortable during their time with us. We offer both IV sedation and inhalation sedation depending on your preference and suitability.

IV Sedation - IV sedation is where a specially trained member of our team will safely inject a sedative to ensure you remain comfortably sedated throughout treatment.

Inhalation Sedation - If you are not keen on needles, inhalation sedation is a great alternative to IV sedation. It works using a small face mask that we place over your nose and mouth so that you can inhale nitrous oxide and oxygen enabling you to feel calm and relaxed during your treatment.

Wand Painless Injection

We know all too well that many people do not like needles, which can be a real sticking point when it comes to local anaesthetic, something commonly used to prevent pain during dental treatments.

For that reason we have invested in state-of-the-art technology to allow our dentist to provide local anaesthetic injections without the pain or discomfort associated with traditional syringe systems.

The Wand Painless Injection using a special computer system and a small, pen-like hand piece allows the dentist to administer an even flow of local anaesthetic to the affected area. In some instances, we can even ensure patients avoid the swollen lip and numb face, cheek and tongue associated with local anaesthetic injections. The system is revolutionary and advanced, leaving behind the antiquated syringe administration techniques used previously.

We are looking forward to seeing you
